My Best Friend's Wedding is a 1997 romantic comedy film from TriStar Pictures, directed by P. J. Hogan. It stars Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney, Rupert Everett and Rachel Griffiths.

The film was a commercial and critical success. The song "I Say a Little Prayer (For You)" was covered by singer Diana King and featured heavily in the picture, making it a Billboard top 20 hit. The soundtrack featured a number of Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs.

Plot:
Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts), a 27-year-old New York restaurant critic, receives a call from her longtime friend Michael O'Neil (Dermot Mulroney).

In college, the two made an agreement that if neither of them were married by the time they turned 28, they would marry each other. Three weeks before her 28th birthday, Michael tells her he has fallen in love with, and is about to marry, Kimberly Wallace (Cameron Diaz), a 20-year-old University of Chicago student from a wealthy family. This causes Julianne to realize she has always been in love with Michael and cannot stand to see him wed another woman.

Julianne heads to Chicago, intent on sabotaging Micheal's wedding. Soon after arriving she meets Kimberly, who puts her on the spot and asks her to be the maid of honor. Julianne reluctantly agrees. This sets off a comical Jekyll and Hyde scenario, where Julianne must pretend to be the dutiful maid of honor while secretly scheming ways to prevent the wedding from happening. She engages in petty sabotage — for example, taking Kimberly and Michael to a karaoke bar after discovering Kimberly is a terrible singer, and making her sing in front of a large crowd — and later invites her gay friend George (Rupert Everett) to Chicago and pretends she is engaged to him, hoping to make Michael jealous.

Following a series of these unsuccessful attempts to break up Kimberly and Michael, George convinces Julianne to do the obvious: tell Michael she is in love with him. On the morning of the wedding, Julianne confesses her love to Michael and asks him to marry her instead.

She then kisses Michael right as Kimberly appears. Kimberly doesn't know Michael was just stunned and wasn't kissing Julianne back, and she runs away in distress. Michael chases her, and Julianne chases him. After consulting George, Julianne finally accepts that she lost Michael to Kimberly. She finds Kimberly and apologizes; all agree to carry on with the wedding. In the end, Michael marries Kimberly.

At the wedding reception, Julianne makes a toast and finally bids goodbye to Michael, literally and figuratively. The bride and groom depart for their honeymoon, and Julianne is left sitting alone at a table. She receives an unexpected phone call from George, who is surreptitiously calling from an adjacent table, knowing that Julianne would be depressed. The two friends dance together as the film ends.

The movie focuses on Will Keane (Gere) who falls in love with Charlotte Fielding (Ryder), a sweet, but terminally ill young woman.

Plot

Will Keane, a 48-year old restaurant owner, is still quite the playboy with a persistent case of commitment-phobia. When he meets Charlotte Fielding, a free-spirited woman half his age, he expects another quick and easy romance. But nothing about their relationship is quick or easy. Instead their encounters are rife with intergenerational clashes, differing philosophies and an urgent sense of sensuality and connection.

Just when Will is tempted to bail out with his usual line about "not promising forever," Charlotte responds with reasons of her own about why she feels this relationship can't last forever: she's dying because she has an heart neuroblastoma.

Although Charlotte's grandma, Dolly is not too keen on their budding relationship, she doesn't express any fears in front of her. But she warns Will to leave her alone on account of the fact that she is "really sick". Her fears though have another dimension to them. She doesn't want her granddaughter to be hurt the same way her daughter was and more so by the same man. When Charlotte comes home one evening soaked in tears, after learning that Will is very much a casanova, Dolly divulges the details of the past about her mom and Will that she had kept from her so far. Charlotte gets angry with her for not trying to "protect" her especially being the only family that she had in the world. Will visits Charlotte seeking forgiveness. Charlotte though angry, forgives Will and they go on to have a short sweet affair.

In the end, she dies and Will is left alone, but he starts living with his daughter that has a child.

An Affair to Remember is a 1957 film starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and directed by Leo McCarey.

The film is considered one of the most romantic of all time, according to the American Film Institute. The movie was a remake of McCarey's 1939 film Love Affair, starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. An Affair to Remember was almost identical to Love Affair on a scene to scene basis. McCarey used the same screenplay as the original film, which was penned by Delmer Daves and Donald Ogden Stewart.

Contributing to the success of the 1957 film is its theme song "An Affair to Remember (Our Love Affair)' composed by Harry Warren with lyrics by Leo McCarey and Harold Adamson. The song is sung by Vic Damone during the opening credits and then sung later by Deborah Kerr's character, a nightclub singer. Kerr's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed for Kerr in the film The King and I.

Plot:

Nickie Ferrante (Grant), a well-known playboy and painter, meets Terry McKay (Kerr) aboard the SS Constitution. They fall in love with each other despite being engaged to other people. They agree to reunite on top of the Empire State Building in six months time if Nickie is able to provide for her and if they still feel the same.

On the day of their rendezvous, Terry is struck by a car and rushed to the hospital. Nickie waits all evening for her, unaware of her accident. Dejected, Nickie leaves, assuming that Terry has forgotten about him or has changed her mind.

Terry is injured in the accident and uses a wheelchair. Despite all, she goes on to become a teacher. She doesn't see Nickie again until she encounters both him and his former fiancée at the ballet a year later. Nickie can only bring himself to say hello to her, not noticing her condition because she is seated. He is too proud to ask her why she never showed up, and she will not burden him with the terrible truth of her injury.

Nickie decides to visit Terry. She never moves from the couch, but her face falls unexpectedly as he begins to tell her about a painting that he had done of her. He knows only that it was given to a young woman in a wheelchair. Nickie suddenly makes a connection, and upon seeing the painting in Terry's bedroom, he realizes that she cannot walk. Subsequently, all is revealed about the fateful day that they were supposed to meet. In the final emotional scene, the two declare their love for one another.

A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film is grounded in the actual experience of co-writer Al Franken (assisted by Rain Man scripter Ronald Bass). Franken is best known for his affiliation with Saturday Night Live and Politically Incorrect, and as the author of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations. Plot Outline When a woman's long-time friend says he's engaged, she realizes she loves him herself... and sets out to get him, with only days before the wedding.
A woman who, by a promise made years earlier, is supposed to marry her best friend in three weeks, even though she doesn't want to. When she finds out that he's marrying someone else, she becomes jealous and tries to break off the wedding.
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. Harvard Law student/hockey jock (Oliver Barrett IV) meets Radcliffe music wonk (Jennifer Cavalleri), and the couple soon enter into a relationship. When the couple decide to get married, Oliver's father (Oliver Barrett III) threatens to disinherit him from the family will, leaving Oliver and Jennifer to start their marriage at rock-bottom. Jennifer and her dad (Phil Cavalleri) do what they can to bring father and son back together, but the two prefer to remain at war with one another. Years go by, and the young couple attempt to have children, only to discover that she is malfunctioning.

Strife-torn America wanted a meat-and-potatoes romance in the late '60s, and the country embraced Erich Segal's slim, generic-sounding novel in a big way. It did so again for the film adaptation in 1970, starring Ryan O'Neal as a law student who defies his rich and powerful father (Ray Milland) on every issue, including the former's love for a music student (Ali MacGraw). The two marry, start life together...and then the Grim Reaper turns up at the door. Directed by Arthur Hiller (The In-Laws), the film ends up lacking the kind of stylistic boost that might have made it a must-see for the ages. But its faithfulness to the book's uncomplicated and, yes, moving intentions is pretty solid. O'Neal is convincing as a nice guy who's as bullheaded in his own way as his steely father (a nice job by Milland), and MacGraw has a way of getting under one's skin. Julia Ormond faced one of the great challenges of her career when she tried to re-create Audrey Hepburn's title role in the 1995 remake of 1954's Sabrina. Happily, Ormond performed admirably, and while she may not have the same gamine charm of Hepburn, she makes the role her own. In fact, her transformation from mousy girl to sophisticated young woman is actually more dramatic in this updated version. The basic plot is the same--chauffeur's daughter falls in love with the son of the rich household, only to be wooed away by the older brother for business purposes--but it has been entertainingly modernized: The head of the Larrabee household is the strong matriarch (Nancy Marchand); Sabrina goes to Paris to work with a photographer instead of going to cooking school (although that means the wonderful "new egg" scene of the original had to be ditched); David's (Greg Kinnear) character has been toned down and made more sympathetic; and Humphrey Bogart's revolutionary plastic has become the flattest TV screen ever made. Lauren Holly does a fine job playing Elizabeth Tyson, David's fiancée. A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.
Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. The Notebook

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina.

He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. Two teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks fall in love during one summer together, but are tragically forced apart. When they reunite 7 years later, their passionate romance is rekindled, forcing one of them to choose between true love and class order.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock pair up again in what could be described as the anti-Speed: The Lake House, a sweet, relaxed-paced, whimsical romance. When Alex Wyler (Reeves, The Matrix) moves into an unusual glass house on stilts over a lake, he discovers a note from the previous tenant in the mailbox--but no one's lived in the house for years.

He replies and soon discovers that he's corresponding with a doctor named Kate Forster (Bullock, Miss Congeniality) who's writing from two years in the future. Their correspondence turns romantic and their paths cross in unexpected ways, but when they try to truly connect, danger looms.

Though the plot of The Lake House sounds potentially static, the movie is skillfully structured and, despite some truly awful dialogue, will exert an emotional pull on anyone willing to embrace the device of the time-travelling mailbox. What the movie really demonstrates, though, is the genuine rapport between Bullock and Reeves; Reeves, though handsome, has a wooden presence--but in his few scenes with Bullock, his stiffness transforms into a palpable yearning. On-screen chemistry is slippery and hard to define, but these two have it.

A lonely doctor (Sandra Bullock) who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect (Keanu Reeves). When they discover that they're actually living two years apart, they must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late.

The movie opens with college student Richard Collier gathering rave reviews for his new play. At the party, he comes face to face with an old woman who presses something in his hand and whispers, "Come back to me." He opens his hand to find an old pocket watch. Cut to several years later. Playwright Collier is in the midst of a break-up and writers block. He leaves the city for awhile to think things out and finds himself near his alma mater at the Grand Hotel. While wandering around the hotel, he finds a photograph of a beautiful young woman. Richard is entranced, and tries to find out all he can about her. During the course of his research he learns she was Elise McKenna, an actress from the turn of the century. He also discovers that she was the mysterious old woman who gave him the watch. Finally determining that he must meet her somehow, he employees self-hypnosis and wills himself back to 1912. He meets Elise and they fall in love, which does not make her manager, William Fawcett Robinson, happy at all. Will their love survive Robinson's disapproval? Will Richard be able to stay in 1912?

Set in Los Angeles, California, the film is a remake of Wim Wenders' 1987 German film Wings of Desire, which was set in Berlin. In the film, an angel (Cage) falls in love with a human woman (Ryan) and has to decide whether to become mortal to spend his life with her or to stay an angel.
The angel who becomes human is a sort of herdsman for the dead, known simply as Seth. He listens to music every dawn and dusk, which apparently originates in the sunrise and sunset. With him are scores of other angels, invisible and undetected by human adults. Seth spends considerable time thinking about humans; he becomes very interested in their thoughts and feelings, particularly those of a female heart surgeon (Ryan).

Before Sunset (2004), is a film, the sequel to Before Sunrise (1995).

Jesse (Ethan Hawke) again meets Celine (Julie Delpy), this time at a book signing to promote his first novel, which is based on their encounter nine years earlier. They again venture around and talk, this time in Paris, in the hopes of discovering each other again.
Like its predecessor, the film was directed by Richard Linklater. However, this time he shares credit with both Hawke and Delpy on the screenplay. Story credit is shared by original Before Sunrise screenwriter Kim Krizan and Richard Linklater.
Actress Julie Delpy also penned two songs featured in the film. A third was included in the closing credits and movie soundtrack.
This film is noted in its use of the Steadicam for tracking shots and its use of long takes. Noteworthy too is that the film takes place in real time—that is, the time elapsed in the story is also the run time of the film. Furthermore, the sequel was also released nine years after Before Sunrise, the same amount of time that has lapsed in the plot since the events of the first movie.
In a documentary Ethan Hawke suggests the possibility of further films in the series. He said that it would be nice to have 4 or 5 films plotting the course of their relationship.

They walk, sit in a cafe, walk again, take a boat trip, ride in a car, and go to Celine's apartment. Jesse is married and has a child, and Celine has a boyfriend, but, as becomes clear in the course of them talking, both are not very happy. As thirtysomethings (Celine is 32), they look back at their meeting with both longing and regret; at their naive worldview, their steadfast belief in the power of love, they simply accept the mistakes of the past in order to start all over again. However, the nine years apart, and the divergences of their paths in life, has revealed the significance of their initial, brief encounter.
The film brings out some remarkable subtleties of their characters. Delpy has been so wounded by years of unrewarding relationships that she's extremely guarded . . . a guard that slowly (and resoundingly) breaks down in a remarkable scene set in a limousine. The film would not work effectively without viewers attention to the depth of her emotional guard, the degree to which it motivates her character, and the slow process she takes in removing it.

Someone Like You is a 2001 motion picture, based on Laura Zigman's novel Animal Husbandry which tells a story of a heartbroken woman who is looking for the reason she was dumped. The film stars Ashley Judd, Greg Kinnear, Hugh Jackman and Marisa Tomei and was directed by Tony Goldwyn. The running time is 97 minutes.

Summary

Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) works at a small TV station along with Eddie (Hugh Jackman), the producer and Diane Roberts (Ellen Barkin), an upcoming talk show host.

They get a new colleague, Ray (Greg Kinnear) and Jane gets involved with him. After some time, he breaks up with her and Jane learns that he is actually the boyfriend of her boss, Diane Roberts.

Desparate, Jane tries to find out why men break up with women and comes up with several theories comparing men with bulls which she promotes under the name of a fake psychologist in her best friend Liz's (Marisa Tomei) magazine.

She dumps her theories based partly on the cheating womanizer Eddie when she moves in with him and discovers that he isn't as cold and cruel as she made him (and the rest of his species) to be: he himself suffers from a broken heart and tries to compensate for it.
Finally, Jane confesses on Diane Roberts' talk show that she made everything up, that she had an affair with Ray and is in love with Eddie. She meets him after her TV appearance and they kiss.
